In 2024, Spain will continue to be a top choice for emigrants due to its high quality of life, affordable living costs, excellent healthcare, expat-friendly policies, expat community, emphasis on work-life balance, and diverse educational opportunities.

On December 22, 2022, Spain introduced a law to attract entrepreneurs and digital nomads — professionals who work remotely for companies not based in Spain.

For whom will it be interesting?

This is designed for individuals with a stable income who work entirely remotely, either for an employer or self-employed, with at least three years of professional experience. Digital nomads, as defined here, do not include those who work in crafts, agriculture, or online sales as self-employed individuals.

List of main documents for digital nomads:

Application for a long-term visa (Solicitud de Visado Nacional);

Passport valid for at least two years and a clean visa page. Passports issued more than 10 years ago are not accepted.

A recent colour photograph (3.5×4.5 on a white background);

Proof of residence in Spain: a real estate rental contract, a purchase of real estate, a notary deed of residence with friends or relatives (one of the options);

criminal record certificate(s) issued by the country of residence of the applicant for the past 2 years. The applicant must also submit a responsible declaration confirming the absence of criminal records for the last five years;

A medical certificate (original and copy) stating that there are no illnesses as prescribed by the International Health Regulations translated into Spanish by a sworn translator or issued in Spain by a Spanish medical officer;

Payment of the visa fee. Visa fee payment is compulsory and has to be made at the same time when submitting a visa application in local currency.

Specific requirements

1) Certification of working for at least 3 months (before the visa application) for a foreign company;

2) Certificate issued by the Government Companies House, declaring the date of creation of the company (or companies) and its nature of business;

3) For applicants registered with British National Social Security:

Provide an S1 form and proof of registration with Spanish Social Security.

Submit a declaration from the company (for employees) or applicant (if self-employed) to adhere to British social security obligations, including the A1 form from HMRC.

4) For applicants registered with Spanish National Social Security:

Submit proof of registration with Spanish Social Security, or RETA if self-employed.

Provide a declaration committing to Spanish social security obligations before work starts.

certificate issued by the Government Companies House, declaring the date of creation of the company (or companies) and its nature of business.

5) Documentary proof of financial means: at least 200% of the monthly Spanish national minimum wage (approximately 2500 euros) or 30100 euros per year.

6) Copy of the university degree or professional certificate confirming that the applicant has at least 3 years of experience in his or her business activity.

Decision terms

The legal term for reaching a decision is 10 days, but this term may be extended when an interview or additional documents are requested.

The refusal-failure

rate is minimal.

Validity of the visa

This visa will be valid for a maximum of 1 year, or the same validity as the authorization granted to live and work in Spain.

Sworn translations and legislations

All foreign documents must be legalised by the consulates of the issuing country or bear the Hague Apostille if from a country that signed the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961. However, official documents from EU Member States do not require legalisation.
